How to use Bromine Tablets for your pool
If you own a pool or a hot tub, then you need to have some sort of sanitizer added to it. If you do not add a sanitizer, then the bacteria will start to build up. This can make the water unsafe to be inside. One of the biggest running costs of having a pool or hot tub will be ensuring that the sanitizer levels are kept up in the water.
Before you can even consider adding sanitizer to the water, you need to choose which option is right for you. By default, a lot of people will opt for chlorine. However, this is not always going to be the best option. On this page, we want to look at the alternative; bromine tablets. We want to help you decide whether bromine is going to be better for your needs. You will be surprised that bromine may be a lot more effective than chlorine in many cases.
How does Bromine work?
As you may know, there are two ways in which you can sanitize your pool or hot tub. You have bromine and the more popular option of chlorine. We are going to be talking about the former on this page, but we do want to point out that these tablets will work in different ways.
Chlorine needs to be added regularly to your pool or hot tub. This is because it will sanitize the bacteria, but once it does that, it becomes ineffective. It is filtered out by the water filters. If you do not add more chlorine, then the bacteria will start to build up rather quickly. In most cases, you will need to add chlorine once per day, or once every other day at the most. It is important that you check chlorine levels to ensure that bacteria are kept at bay.
Bromine works differently. It does not become inactive once it comes into contact with bacteria. It will kill the bacteria, but the bromine will stick around and continue to kill off more bacteria. The result is that you do not need to top up bromine levels all that frequently. In most cases, more bromine tablets will only need to be added once per week, on average. The fact that the bromine sticks around for a while will also make it easier to keep sanitizer levels evened out.
Why you should use Bromine tablets
As we mentioned previously, bromine tablets need to be added to the water less than chlorine tablets. Granted, this is not something that will save you that much money (it is actually more expensive to use bromine tablets), but it will reduce the amount of time that you need to dedicate to your daily pool maintenance. In most cases, you will only need to add bromine to the pool once a week.
If you have a hot tub or a heated pool, then bromine tablets are always going to be the best option. When you put chlorine in water with a higher temperature, the chlorine becomes a lot less effective. It will still be able to remove the bacteria, but you may need to add a bit more chlorine to ensure that everything remains in check. With bromine, you don’t have to worry about that. Everything will work no matter the temperature of the water. It can even operate at low temperatures effectively!
If you are not a fan of the ‘pool smell’, then you may also find that bromine is good for you. While it is chlorine-based, there is not any overpowering odor to the bromine. This can make it a touch more relaxing when you are laying back in your hot tub. You also do not need to worry about that painful sensation if you manage to get a little bit up your nose or in your mouth.
A lot of people who have sensitive skin also find that bromine is better for them. Chlorine, even in smaller quantities, can cause skin irritation. If you have an allergy to chlorine, then you may find that using bromine isn’t going to help your symptoms all that much. However, if you just have sensitive skin, then you will be pleased to know that bromine is a far milder chemical. This means that you may fare a lot better when you are exposed to it for long periods of time.
Finally, with bromine, it is going to be a lot easier to stabilize the ph level of your water. So if you have been struggling to get ph levels in check, then replacing chlorine with bromine may work a little bit better for you.
The Downsides of Using Bromine Tablets
The major issue that you are going to have when you are using Bromine tablets is the fact that they are a bit more expensive than chlorine. It is also going to be a lot more difficult to source. Sure. Bromine tablets are only going to be a few more dollars more than their chlorine equivalent, but when you are using them regularly, the price is going to stack up rather quickly. In fact, throughout the year, you may end up paying 25% to 50% more for your bromine tablets.
As we mentioned previously, bromine is fantastic at higher temperatures, but it doesn’t dissolve as well in cooler pools. It will eventually dissolve, but if you are planning to operate your pool at lower temperatures, then chlorine is often going to be the far safer option. You may also find that bromine doesn’t do a brilliant job at keeping the pool clean when it is directly exposed to UV rays. This means that bromine is probably going to be better for you if your pool or hot tub is indoors. If you are using bromine outdoors, then bear in mind that it will need to be topped up far more frequently. The cost of this will, once again, start to add up.
Bromine tablets will also make the water a bit cloudier. It is probably not going to be that apparent in hot tubs and the like, but when you are using bromine in swimming pools, the effect is going to be quite noticeable. Chlorine tablets keep the water nice and clear, which is quite aesthetic.
To cap it all off, bromine is a bit more difficult to wash off of the skin. It is quite noticeable if you do not manage to do it too, which is going to cause issues for a few people!
How do you use Bromine tablets?
Perhaps the best way to use bromine tablets in your pool is to purchase an automated feeder. This way you do not need to focus too much on adding the tablets to the pool or hot tub. Everything is going to be done automatically for you.
When you are using bromine for the first time (and the second time), you will want to ensure that you keep the pumps for your pool or hot tub running for at least 24 hours. This will help to ensure that everything is flushed out properly.
After this, it is a case of maintaining your pool. This means regularly checking ph and bromine levels. You will want to ensure that there is at least 2 parts per million of bromine in the pool. If there is more than 5 parts per million, then this is too much bromine and you will need to make adjustments to the level.
Remember, you should only ever use bromine tablets as directed. Do not use more bromine than recommended for the amount of water you have in your pool or hot tub. If you use too much, then it can cause skin irritation, even in people who are not normally sensitive to the chemical.
Purchasing Bromine tablets
If you can, you should always be purchasing your bromine tablets in bulk. Since you are going to be getting through a lot of them, particularly if your pool or hot tub is outdoors, then you could save a little bit of cash like this.
Most bromine that you purchase will be pure bromine. However, we still suggest that you only purchase bromine from reputable manufacturers. You will often find it is a little bit more potent, and there will be few (if any) additives which can impact how it works. If you are unsure as to whether a brand is worth your money, then you can always read reviews to get a feel for what other people have thought of that particular chemical.
Remember to consider the pros and cons of bromine tablets that we mentioned previously. If you have a hot tub, then bromine is almost always going to be the best option for you. However, if you have a pool, then weigh up the differences between chlorine and bromine to find which one fits your needs a bit better. Remember, no matter which option you purchase, you need to ensure that you purchase the best chemicals you can afford. This will ensure that your pool is perfectly sanitized.
